Learn to Play a Zombie: Quick Start for Beginners

Learn to play a zombie through six quick choices: energy, body rule, movement, gaze, sound and one simple scare – ready to try immediately.

Want to try a better zombie performance right away? You do not need a full biography to begin. Make six clear choices and test them immediately.

1. Choose one basic energy

Pick a simple direction: heavy and slow, nervous and stimulus-driven or still and watchful. Perform ten seconds using only that energy and no sound.

For more inspiration, see Zombie Types in Film, Anime, Manga, Comics and Games.

2. Give the body one rule

Choose exactly one clear difference: one shoulder leads, one knee stays stiffer, the head reacts late or one hand takes over. Do not add everything at once.

Test: Can you recognise the figure without makeup or sound? Go deeper in Posture, Facial Expression and Gaze.

3. Build a three-part movement pattern

  1. two or three normal steps for your zombie,
  2. a short stop or direction change,
  3. one stronger impulse.

Repeat the pattern three times before changing speed or direction. Go deeper in Learn Zombie Movement.

4. Give the gaze one job

Decide what activates you: movement, sound or direct proximity. Let perception react first and the rest of the body follow. That feels more controlled than constant staring.

5. Choose one sound

Use breath, a short click, one recurring groan or a single fragment of speech. Place it at only one point in your movement pattern.

Test: Does the figure still work for ten seconds in complete silence? If yes, the sound will become stronger. More in Develop Zombie Sounds.

6. Try one simple scare

  1. Act as if you have not noticed the person.
  2. Let your chosen stimulus reach you.
  3. Stop briefly.
  4. Align gaze and body.
  5. Use one clearly stronger impulse.
  6. Return to your basic state.

The scare comes from the change, not from getting as close as possible. The general mechanism is explained in Scare Acting Basics.

A simple zombie scare in four steps: stay unnoticed, notice the stimulus, freeze briefly and use one clear impulse.

The 60-second zombie challenge

  • 0–15 seconds: basic energy and body rule.
  • 15–25 seconds: movement pattern.
  • 25–30 seconds: notice a stimulus and stop.
  • 30–40 seconds: one clear impulse.
  • 40–50 seconds: your single sound.
  • 50–60 seconds: reduce intensity and end in a clear image.

If that minute works, you already have enough material for a believable beginner zombie. The full workshop does not simply repeat the same steps. It explains why they work and how to turn them into a distinct character.
