Sensual, strange, unsettling
Burlesque is stage art made from dance, costume, music, acting, humour and tease: the craft of curiosity and expectation. It is not simply about taking clothes off. A routine is built on posture, timing and eye contact. What will be revealed? What stays hidden? And who is really controlling the room?
At Halloween, it becomes an enticing counterpart to the usual scare night. A vampire can be glamorous, a witch funny, a clown elegant and the undead irresistible. Horror is not a dirty backdrop here; it is part of the character. Black lace, a fake fang or smudged lipstick can say more than a long speech.
Scare actors repel. Burlesque draws you in.
Scare actors and burlesque performers both know how to direct attention. Costume, make-up, physical tension, music and timing matter in both worlds. Either can change the feeling in a room with a single movement.
Their goals are almost opposite, though. A scare actor wants to trigger fear, disgust or the urge to escape. The character jumps from the dark, gets uncomfortably close and appears ill, wounded or no longer fully human. The audience steps back, searches for the exit or covers its eyes.
Burlesque does the reverse. The character invites. It holds your gaze, builds tension slowly and makes the audience lean closer – at least with its eyes. Instead of “Run!”, the message is “Keep looking.” Even when a routine turns grotesque, it remains an invitation. The scare is not an attack; it is a flirtation with the uncanny.
That is the Halloween appeal. Seduction and danger stand next to each other. An elegant movement can turn monstrous. A smile can charm and unsettle. You laugh, hold your breath for a second, and keep watching.
